Burlap Wreath Update

I just wasn't happy with my new burlap wreath.  The black bow just seemed blah to me, so I bought 1/4 yard of red burlap at Hobby Lobby today and tied a big bow and added it along with a glittery Valentine pick.  Maybe I'll just change out the bow and the pick with the holidays.  I still want to glitter the letter too and figure out a better way to attach it, but I'm happy with it for now. :)

Ugly Chair Part Deaux

I am in no way ready for the big reveal, but I did want to share a few pictures of the remaking of the second ugly chair.

Here she is, in all her tweedy, mauve glory.

I honestly don't know where we got this chair.  One day it just appeared at my house.  I think the hubs found it on the side of the road. Seriously.  I've tried on numerous occasions to throw it away, but one of my boys always fetches it from the trash and wants to keep it!  I have resigned myself to the fact that the chair is staying, but I have not resigned myself to mauve tweed.  Even in the 90s I don't think I would have liked this chair, although it would have gone perfectly with the mauve and country blue Laura Ashley loveliness I had going on at that time.

As you can see, the seat was removable, much like a dining room chair.  I just unscrewed it from underneath and it popped right off.

Then I pulled off the piping, the fabric and foam from the front of the chair.

  The back of the chair is upholstered from the front side of the chair. You can see the reverse side of the fabric from the front of the chair.

And here she is, completely disrobed and down to the frame.  The "disrobing" is really the hardest part.  Upholstery takes a lot of staples and it can be a real bear pulling those staples out.  My poor knuckles are so scratched up from prying staples out with pliers and a screwdriver and my back and arms are so sore from all the pulling and tugging, but I got it done.

I went ahead and covered the seat because I was dying to see how the new fabric looked.  I love the whimsy of the polka dots but I think the color scheme gives it a masculine feel.

Covering the seat cushion really was easy breezy.  I just centered the cushion on the fabric, folded the edges around to the backside of the seat and stapled.  When I staple I usually start at the top center and put in one staple, then I go to the bottom center and then side to side.  After I check to see if the fabric stayed centered I  go back and bring the corners in and staple them down.  When I get the corners like I like them I go back and finish the sides.  The more staples the better.  You don't want your fabric to pucker on the finished side.

I opted to cover over the original fabric because as you can see in the before picture, there is a detail seam sewn through to the cushion.  I didn't want to ruin the cushion by trying to tear the fabric off so I just covered over it.  I will add a new piece of that black backing fabric to cover the edges and give it a professional look.

I haven't attached the seat or started on the back of the chair yet because I plan on painting the frame black first.  I hope to have everything done this weekend and I will move the chair back into my son's bedroom.  I may do a little sewing with the left over fabric too.  I got this on clearance and bought the rest of the bolt, so I may have enough to make some pillow shams for the bed.  Wish me luck!

Burlap Wreath

I have officially jumped on the burlap bandwagon and I am enjoying the ride too!  I have fallen in love with all the burlap wreaths that keep popping up on Pinterest (if you haven't discovered Pinterest you need to!  It's my new obsession!) so my good friend Jennifer and I decided we'd make our own. 

Jennifer is a new friend that I've gotten to know through work and we have so much in common.  First of all we are both named Jennifer - my first name is Jennifer and my middle is Wren (Jenny Wren when I was little, but Jennifer in school because it was my first name and apparently middle names were not allowed!).  Secondly, we both have sons named Seth, and thirdly, one of my sons and one of her sons share a birthday.  But the main reason I like Jennifer is because, like me, she looks at things and says, "I can make that!"  We have had a great time making wreaths.  We both made mesh wreaths at Christmastime and last friday we got together and each made a burlap wreath.

I made this wreath just like I did the mesh wreath.  I used the same wire wreath frame from Michael's but the burlap isn't nearly as wide as the mesh so I had to do two rows of the burlap to fill the wreath.  The burlap came from Michael's as well.  Each spool has 10 feet of burlap ribbon that is 6 inches wide.  I used almost 2 spools of ribbon.  I bought the black mesh ribbon from Hobby Lobby. This is a narrower version of the mesh and it is 6 inches wide too.  The letter came from Hobby Lobby as well, and I painted it black.  I'm thinking I might add a little sparkle to the letter with some black glitter and I think the bow needs a little something, but this is how it looks today.  I'm thinking I might get some red burlap to make another bow and maybe add some hearts for Valentine's day.  We'll see what inspiration strikes me at Hobby Lobby tomorrow!

Oldies but Goodies

Okay, I'll confess, I have not bought the turquoise paint for my table, nor have I started on the second ugly chair, so I decided I would post some oldies but goodies.  These are some items that I have made in the past but not actually blogged about, so they'll be new to you, but old to me.  Anyway...  you've seen the wedding cake cookies I made for a friend and the apple cookies I made for my class, but here are a couple of other cookies I've done.

Ruler cookies for teacher appreciation week.  I placed this in a snack sized plastic bag with a label that read "Teachers Rule".

I made baby carriage cookies for several baby showers this year.

Along with making cookies, I've done a lot of sewing for my neice, but also for other friends babies.

A pink plisse' peasant dress and bloomers with white eyelet trim for my darling neice.  I think this is one of my favorite outfits.

A onsie decorated with fabric roses and bandana bloomers with eyelet ruffles I made for a friends new baby.

Another peasant dress for my neice.  I loved the fabric on this one.  I also made matching pants but forgot to take a picture of them.

A fully lined make-up bag made using bandanas. It was my first attempt at adding a zipper to something!

Besides sewing, I did a little crafting too.

 For a last day of school gift for my class I printed a tag that read "Stay Cool This Summer" from some site I found online (wish I could remember where) and tied it with curling ribbon around several unfrozen ice pops.

Fish bowls made using rice cakes, blue icing and goldfish crackers during "pets" week at preschool.

I actually started on a new craft today - a burlap wreath!  I ran out of burlap ribbon so I've got to run back to Michael's but I will post about it the minute I am finished.  I also bough the fabric for my second ugly chair, so I hope to have that started and finished soon too!  I've got lots of projects planned and I can't wait to get started!

Blog Slacker!

I know, I know... I am the biggest blog slacker ever, but it was just so busy the month of December I barely got on the computer. Now that the Christmas decorations are packed away, my more than 300 emails have been deleted weeded out, the laundry is caught up and the boys and I are back to school, I've got a little more time on my hands.  Instead of making a list of resolutions this year I've made a list of projects I want to complete this year.  I never seem to keep my resolutions - if I did, I'd be rich and skinny, so I'm hoping I'll be better at a "To Do" list.  First on the list is to re-do the second ugly chair.  I'm thinking about changing the finish on the wood by painting it either black or ivory.  First I need to decide on the fabric.

Second is doing some more sewing for my darling neice.  I don't think I showed y'all the precious reversible jumper I made for her first birthday party.  She had a pink snowflake themed party so this dress was PERFECT!

The outside of the dress is corderoy (I almost typed "pink corderoy" but I thought, duh, they can see that it's pink!) with a minky dot snowflake applique.  The opposite side is pink and white polka dot fabric.  I love the ball fringe trim too!  I think this is my favorite outfit to date!  Of course, I wasn't ready to quit while I was ahead, so I made her this little cutie to wear Christmas.

Another project I've been working on is my 1980's sofa table.  I've already painted it ivory, even though I really wanted to paint it turquoise.  I chickened out, thinking my living room is mostly earth tones with red accents and turquoise wouldn't go, but then I went to my friend Jennifer's house and her living room was very similar to mine except for her turquoise table!  It looked great, so now I am determined to paint my table as well.

Now to get motivated and get busy!
